Specifications and Constraints

Operational Details

Canpar processes small-parcel shipments originating in Canada, with domestic, US, and international service options. Confirm that your account and selected service cover the destination. Rate Shopping can return an estimated delivery date and transit time when supplied by Canpar.

  • Prepaid freight: Use prepaid freight billing. Third-party and freight-collect shipments are rejected. COD collects an amount from the recipient and is separate from freight-collect billing.

  • Retired services: Do not use service codes C or D; these services are no longer available.

  • Finalization: When using User finalize, finalize shipments on the shipping day. The carrier end-of-day request uses the current Eastern Time date.

Configuring a Baseline Account

A Baseline Account serves as the fundamental connection point between techSHIP and the carrier's system. It acts as a template that holds the credentials and fundamental properties required to process shipments.

The techSHIP AI Assistant is available from the Carrier page for supported Carrier configuration tasks. For detailed conceptual information and advanced configuration, refer to 📄 techSHIP AI Assistant: Overview & Availability [Information].

Adding a Carrier

Before adding an account, you must ensure the Carrier entity is available for your location.

  1. Click My Carriers from the left menu under the Carriers category.

  2. Click Add Carrier.

  3. Select the desired Carrier.

You may encounter additional messages depending on the carrier status or your plan:

  • Subscription Required (⭐): If the carrier has a star icon, you will see a message stating "To use this carrier, a subscription upgrade is required." Press Contact to Upgrade to proceed.

  • Carrier Suspended: If the carrier has not been used for an extended period, you will see a message stating “This carrier is currently on hold...” Click Request Assistance to reactivate it.

  • Setup Fee Waived: If a carrier from the same carrier group is already installed in your location, you can add this carrier without incurring additional fees.

  1. If needed, update the carrier Name.

  2. Click Add Carrier.

If the purchase confirmation appears, complete the following steps:

  • Review the purchase notice and any applicable charge information.

  • Optionally enter a PO Number.

  • Select I am authorized to complete this purchase on behalf of my organization.

  • Click Purchase to confirm the Carrier addition.

Preview

Once the Carrier is added, you will be automatically redirected to the Carrier page to continue setting it up.

  1. Enter the Code of the Carrier as it appears in your host system.

The Code of the Carrier must match exactly the value defined in the host system. Any discrepancy (including casing or extra spaces) may prevent the carrier from working correctly.

  1. Click Save.

If your facility utilizes the centralized Pickup Schedule, we highly recommend adding this new carrier to your calendar now. While not required to process labels, this ensures accurate induction metrics for your Insights dashboards. To learn more, see 📄 Understanding the Centralized Pickup Schedule & Expected Induction Logic [Information].

Adding a Baseline Account

From the Carrier page, click Add Account to create a new Baseline Account.

You will be redirected to the Baseline Account page to complete the setup.

Entering incorrect values will prevent the system from generating shipping labels.

General Tab

In the General tab, define the administrative properties:

  • Name: Enter a descriptive name for the account.

Enter a descriptive name based on unique properties. E.g.:

  • Carrier Name - Account Number (CarrierX - 123456789)

  • Carrier Name - Consolidator Name (CarrierY - MyConsolidator)

  • Carrier Name

  • Usage: Select the most suitable option:

    • Test: Used for sandbox or onboarding purposes.

    • Production: Used for live shipping.

Keep the Status field set to its default Active value. An account must be Active to remain fully editable. For detailed conceptual information on account statuses, refer to 📄 How to Inactivate and Activate a Carrier Baseline Account [Step-by-Step Guide].

Carrier Tab

Connection and Finalization

  • Username, Password, and Account number: Enter the credentials and account number supplied by the Canpar account holder.

  • Consolidate mode: Select User finalize to submit the carrier end-of-day request when finalizing in techSHIP, or Carrier auto-finalize when finalization is handled by Canpar.

  • Pickup mode: Select the pickup arrangement for the account. Per Batch requests a pickup when the batch is finalized.

  • Pickup open time, Pickup close time, and Pickup ready hours: When these fields are shown, enter the warehouse pickup window and the number of hours needed to prepare the shipment. For Per Batch pickup requests, preparation time is added to the finalization time and adjusted to the pickup window. Portals using centralized pickup settings configure these times at the portal level.

Sender Address

In Sender address, enter Sender company, Address 1, Address 2 when applicable, City, State/province, Zip, and Country for the Canadian induction location. Shipment pickup addresses use Canada as the origin country.

Enter Contact phone and Contact email for the pickup location. Client Account contact values are used for shipments when populated; pickup requests use the Baseline Account contact information.

Labels Tab

Formats: The integration produces ZPL labels or PDF labels. PDF labels use a 4 × 6-inch page.

Heavy Freight labels: Canpar may supply additional handling pages for heavy packages. Keep these pages with the corresponding package. When packing slips are included, the output sequence can be shipping label, packing slip, then Heavy Freight page for that package.

Finalizing the Setup

Once you have entered the required information, click Save.

After you save the Baseline Account, check whether the Registration tab or a registration status badge is available.

If neither is available, the Carrier does not use this Registration workflow in techSHIP. If registration is still pending, open the Registration tab and press Registration, then complete 📄 How to Register a Carrier Baseline Account [Step-by-Step Guide] before creating shipments.

From the Carrier page, you can now see the Baseline Account listed with the administrative status Active. The Active status is separate from the account's registration status.

The Baseline Account configuration is now saved. You can continue with Configuring a Client Account below to assign the Baseline Account to a specific Client.

Configuring a Client Account

Adding an Account

Before adding a Client Account, ensure that the Client has been created. For instructions creating a Client, see: 📄 10 - How to create a Client profile [Step-by-Step guide].

  1. Click Clients from the left menu under the Clients section.

  2. Click the Edit icon for the desired Client.

  3. Click Add Accounts.

  4. Optionally, use the Search box to search by Baseline Account Name or Carrier.

  5. Select the Baseline Accounts that will serve as the foundation for your new Client Accounts.

  6. Click Add Accounts.

A toast notification will confirm the accounts were successfully assigned. Click the Refresh icon if recently added accounts are not displayed.

  1. Click Edit on each newly created account.

  2. Configure the available options in each tab (except Carrier).

For complete instructions on configuring this settings, see 📄 How to configure the Billing Account General Options tab [Step-by-Step guide].

Carrier Tab

  • Service code: Select the default service for orders that do not provide one.

  • Override WMS Service Code: Enable this to replace the service supplied by the Integrated system with the Client Account service.

  • Sender name: Enter the sender name used for this client. The induction address comes from the Baseline Account.

  • Contact phone and Contact email: Enter the required shipment contact details for this client.

  • Cost centre: Enter the cost centre to associate with the shipment, when applicable.

  • Basic address validation (PO BOX/empty): Select Enabled to check for PO Box addresses, empty street addresses, and destinations in Alaska or Hawaii. Select Disabled to turn off these integration checks.

  • Adult signature: Select Enable to require an adult signature, Disable to turn it off, or Default to retain the order setting. An explicit Client Account setting takes precedence over the order setting.

  • Print return labels: Enable this to request return labels with outbound shipments. An order can override this setting.

Specifying Rate Shopping Service Codes

Use the Client Account Rates & Markups tab to include or exclude services from Rate Shopping. Ensure the selected services are available for the account and destination.

For detailed instructions on how to configure this, see: Include or exclude Service Codes when Rate Shopping [Step-by-Step Guide].

Label References

Canpar supports two references per package. Configure Reference 1 and Reference 2 in the Labels group of the Client Account General tab. If Reference 1 is empty, the integration uses the package identifier. Configure the references in the Client Account; they do not inherit Baseline Account reference values.

For a comprehensive guide on how to use label references, see: Using order References in your labels [Step-by-Step guide].

Finalizing the Setup

Once you have entered the required information, click Save.

With the account configured and requirements verified, you can now proceed to process orders as described below.

Configuring an Order

The steps described in this section are not required for carrier setup, and they are offered as an optional review if further order-level configuration is required.

Follow the UI Navigation steps in 📄 05 - How to edit an order’s information - [Step-by-Step guide], using the carrier-specific values provided in this guide.

The following settings are available on the Order Carrier tab:

  • Service code: Select the service for the shipment.

  • Declared value: Enter the shipment value to declare to Canpar, when applicable. Review this value before processing; turning off insurance alone does not remove the declared value.

  • COD amount and COD Method: Enter the amount to collect and select the collection method. COD Method appears when COD amount is greater than zero.

  • Premium service: Select a premium delivery option when available for the account and destination.

  • Residential: Select Enable or Disable to specify whether the delivery address is residential. Default uses the Client Account residential setting.

  • Print return labels: Select Enable to request return labels, Disable to omit them, or Default to use the Client Account setting.

  • Signature required and Signature adult: Set the delivery signature requirements. The Client Account signature settings can override these selections during processing.

  • Dangerous goods: Enable this for a shipment containing dangerous goods accepted by Canpar. Confirm the account, service, and goods are eligible with Canpar before processing.

Click Save to apply the order-level changes. After the Order is updated, continue with the standard shipping workflow.

Troubleshooting

  • Connection or authentication rejected: Check Username, Password, and Account number on the Baseline Account Carrier tab. Confirm with the account holder that the credentials belong to the intended account and that CANSHIP is enabled; ask the Canpar representative to enable it if necessary.

  • Third-party or freight-collect shipment rejected: Check the freight payment terms on the order or in the Integrated system. Use prepaid freight billing. To collect an amount from the recipient, configure COD amount and COD Method instead.

  • Address validation blocks processing: Review the destination street address and state on the order. With Basic address validation (PO BOX/empty) enabled in the Client Account Carrier tab, PO Box addresses, empty street addresses, and Alaska or Hawaii destinations are rejected. Correct the shipment data and verify service coverage with Canpar.

  • Retired service selected: If the order reports that service C or D is no longer available, replace it in Service code on the Order Carrier tab and update the Client Account default or incoming service mapping as needed.

  • Return labels missing or unwanted: Check Print return labels on the Order Carrier tab first. Enable and Disable override the Client Account setting; Default follows it.

  • Heavy Freight page appears after a packing slip: Check the tracking number on the handling page against the shipping label for that package. A packing slip can appear between the two; keep all documents associated with the same package together.

  • Manifest unavailable after finalization: Check that the Baseline Account Consolidate mode matches the carrier arrangement. With User finalize, finalize on the shipping day; finalizing on a different day can leave no shipments available for the carrier manifest.
